OUR STUDENTS

Most of CTE's 125 students come from Chelsea, a city with the second highest dropout rate in the state and a very low college placement rate of eligible students. A few, first recruited in Chelsea, currently live in neighboring Everett and Revere.

-_ Students are between the ages of 13 and 19, and all are from low income families whose parents have not attended college.
-_ 42% of students are male and 58% female.
-_ The demographics reflect the composition of the local schools with 17% African American, 63% Latino, 13% white, 4% Asian, and 3% African.
-_ GED and ESL classes enroll approximately 50 adults, of which the majority is parents of our youth.

Many CTE alumna return to Chelsea in leadership positions. Others are pursuing professional careers in Massachusetts or elsewhere in the United States and the world. See Alumni Achievements for more information.

Choice Thru Education has reached thousands of multi-racial, ethnic and low income families through the programs, services, and activities developed over many years. Over 75% of our low-income, high-risk CTE youth pursue post secondary education. Many CTE alumna returning to Chelsea in leadership positions including two judges, three elected to the city council, two to the school committee, the first  Chelsea Latinos serving as Executive Directors of  two major non-profits in the city, the founder of the first and only Vietnamese organization in the city (VAVA),and the director of the local Chelsea Weed and Seed Program ( a federal initiative) Another served as the National Director of the Department of Justice Weed and Seed Program reporting directly to Janet Reno during the Clinton Administration.Numerous graduates are employed in city positions, including the Chelsea police and fire departments and the first Latinos hired by the Receiver’s Office after the city was placed in Receivership.
 
                     
 
Many others moved on to other parts of the country and the world where they are doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs and agents with DTA and Homeland Security to name some of the chosen careers.
